Fieldwork

I have undertaken fieldwork in the UK and overseas (Japan, Azores, Canary Islands, Morocco), undertaking geographical techniques (e.g., sediment coring, stratigraphic logging, geological sampling, mapping, logistical planning).

Japan

Fieldwork sampling volcanic deposits across Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu and Kyushu). This was collaboratively undertaken with Prof. Victoria Smith (University of Oxford), Dr Paul Albert (Swansea University) and Prof. Takehiko Suzuki (Tokyo Met. University). We have collected deposits from volcanic outcrops from explosive centres (Aso, Aira, Towada, Hakone)

Azores

  • Faial, Graciosa, Terceira Islands, Azores (7th – 19th May 2023) to log and sample large eruptions and generate geochemical fingerprints (major and trace elements) for their sources.
  • São Miguel Island, Azores (15 days; 15th – 29th October 2022), sampling >130 pyroclastic deposits (ash and pumice) for geochemical analysis, obtaining material for 14C, and Ar/Ar dating; drawing detailed logs of volcanic sequences. Funded by a BILNAS Research Award 2022 awarded to D. McLean (£8,000). Led by Dr Danielle McLean in collaboration with Prof. Victoria Smith (University of Oxford), Dr. Adriano Pimentel & Prof. Jaco (University of the Azores).

Taforalt Archaeological Site

Excavations at Taforalt archaeological site, Morocco

September 2023 led by Prof. Nick Barton (School of Archaeology). Excavations of Palaeolithic artefacts at Sector 9 and sampling for cryptotephra analysis.
